What does the school counselor do?

  • Individual counseling
  • Group counseling
  • Collaborates with teachers, parents and staff
  • Consults and makes referrals to outside agencies to ensure all students’ needs are being met.
  • The School Counselors will present the Skill of the Month at Marshall's WOW assembly at the beginning of each month. Skills of the Month are based on social and emotional skills and character development.
     

Parent/Guardian Information

This year the Elementary School Counseling Programs will be introducing the Second Step program to all 3 elementary buildings. The Second Step program teachers skills in the following four areas: 
 
1. Skills for Learning: Students gain skills to help themselves learn, including how to focus their attention, listen carefully, use self-talk on task, and be assertive when asking for help with school work.
2. Empathy: Students learn to identify and understand their own and each others' feelings. Students also learn how to take another's perspective and how to show compassion.
3. Emotion Management: Students learn specific skills for calming down when experiencing strong feelings, such as anxiety or anger. 
4. Problem Solving: Students learn a process for solving problems with others in a positive way.
